After years of dedication to the underserved communities in Leavenworth, Kansas, Sister Vickie Perkins, SCL is set to retire on April 11. Her work with Depaul Leavenworth Attainable Housing is a testament to the power of faith and community collaboration.
The Foundation
Sister Vickie’s journey to Leavenworth Attainable Housing began during a pivotal chapter of her life when she had just left her position at Cristo Rey Networks. “Sister Nancy Bauman asked me if I wanted to join a task force that was looking into community needs,” Sister Vickie recalls. Her organizational skills and dedication quickly became apparent as she took on a leading role in shaping the project’s future.
A reception for Sister Vickie will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, from 4– 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 422 Chestnut, Leavenworth.
Building Community Ties
Under Sister Vickie’s guidance, the organization quickly evolved from a simple task force into a critical community resource: Leavenworth Interfaith Community of Hope. They quickly established Welcome Central, originally addressing transportation needs. It soon became a clearinghouse for community services, driving forward initiatives like community meals and a nighttime shelter for the homeless.
Expanding the Vision
As the needs grew, so did the solutions. Sister Vickie was instrumental in the transition from overnight housing solutions at Welcome Central to sustainable, permanent housing through Leavenworth Attainable Housing (now Depaul Leavenworth Attainable Housing). She oversaw the acquisition and renovation of several houses, turning them into homes for those in need. Her ability to mobilize resources and her unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on the community.
A Heartfelt Farewell
As Sister Vickie prepares for retirement, her love for Depaul Leavenworth Attainable Housing is clear. “I have loved this experience. It’s been phenomenal. The people of Leavenworth are fantastic. The city is so wonderful to work with.” Her decision to retire was made with the confidence that the organization’s foundation is strong.
Continuing the Mission
Depaul Leavenworth Attainable Housing is preparing to continue Sister Vickie’s work with Sister Amy Willcott taking the helm as director. “Sister Vickie leaves a lasting legacy. I look forward to continuing her work with the churches, businesses, and Leavenworth community to create and support affordable and attainable housing,” Sister Amy said. In her retirement, Sister Vickie plans to remain involved in the Leavenworth and Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth communities as a volunteer.
Sister Vickie’s work with Leavenworth Interfaith Community of Hope and Depaul Leavenworth Attainable Housing is an example of how individual dedication and community collaboration can spark transformation. As she steps into retirement, her influence will continue to be felt across Leavenworth, in the lives she has changed and the community she has helped build. Both organizations stand as a lasting tribute to her compassion and commitment.
