A Slice of Ireland at Ross Hall

In the kitchen of Ross Hall last Friday, laughter mingled with the comforting aroma of baking bread as Sister Ann Moylan took center stage for the center’s cooking class. With practiced hands and a heart full of memories, Sister Ann guided her fellow Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth through the cherished ritual of making her mother’s Irish Soda Bread.

Sister Ann demonstrated the gentle way to work the dough without overhandling it…Irish soda bread needs a light touch and a warm kitchen.

As the Sisters spent the afternoon together, it was a time to recall family traditions while creating new memories in this shared experience. The class offered more than culinary instruction—it provided a moment of connection to the Irish family heritage of many of the Sisters, and the heritage of Irish women in the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth.

  1. I enjoyed this story very much and the soda bread looks wonderful.

Incidentally, my family name is Moylan. I was the medical librarian at Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver from 1979 to 2015. Then I volunteered in the historical archives until 2023 when we moved to New Harmony, Indiana. Sister Maureen Kehoe was a co-worker for many pleasant years.
