As autumn approaches here in the Midwest, we are deeply aware of the Season of Creation. We daily listen to the cries of creation in its beauty and fragility. We long for peace, unity and invite dialogue, “Good Conversations” with others who might differ from us. In May 2025, a portion of the entire world welcomed our new Pope, a somewhat unknown Cardinal from the United States, who had spent decades in Peru.
In the mystique that unfolds after the conclave and announcement of the new Pope in the Catholic Church, the elected individual selects a new name. Like his predecessor, Pope Francis, Cardinal Robert Prevost in his name choice made a powerful statement. He chose the name Pope Leo XIV. Leo XIII was known for his defense of the rights of workers, his advocacy for immigrants and his care for the poor.
Pope Leo XIV is also known as a passionate environmentalist. He has chosen to return early in his papacy to Castel Gandolfo to formally inaugurate Bogo Laudato Si, as a place of education, ecology and spirituality at this papal summer estate.
The new Pope is committed to social justice. Pope Leo has already extended rights for parents who work in the Vatican. In the early days of his papacy, Leo XIV has laid out his plans for continued dialogue on significant issues.
Here at Marillac Center, we honor the dignity of the human person, the dignity of work, and recognize that all of us are made in God’s image. It is with these elements in mind that we welcome individuals to come to the center to deepen their spiritual lives and their desire to draw closer to God.
An unnamed journalist captured this quote from the Pope that I believe can become a personal mantra and foundational for the programs we offer at Marillac.
To long for a Church
That always seeks peace,
That always seeks charity
That always seeks to be close, especially to those who suffer.

The Genius of Jesus, The World of Women
October 13-18
Facilitator: Kathy Coffee
The gospel is good news for women. Let’s explore Jesus’ welcome with daring imagination. A hint from Scripture is all the imagination needs to start an adventure. We will use the midrash technique to discover intriguing women hidden between the lines of the gospels. Who knows whether Zacchaeus had a daughter or Bartimaeus a wife? When there’s no definite answer, imagine away!
How to engage the women with whom we minister? Let’s look to Jesus, who lifted women’s relationships, changes, joys and daily drudgery into a glimpse of God’s reign. His welcome to women broke the taboos of his day – and continues to us today. Let’s explore and model his inclusivity.
