Welcoming the Light of Christ

By Judith Jackson, SCL

As we are moving toward the completion of the Advent season, the celebration of the feast of Christmas, and the welcoming of the New Year, we become ever more aware of the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises. With the third Sunday of Advent, we noted that the pink candle lit on our Advent wreath offers us the likelihood of hope, joy, and inner peace. We recognize yet again the coming among us of Emmanuel, for God is with us, in the person of Jesus.

Along life’s path, there is treasure to be found in spiritual writers from the past. Caryll Houslander pondered the following in her book, A Child in Winter.

We are God’s creative works in process.
God alone knows what we shall become.

What has God become in us this Advent?
God has visited us with grace and favor.
Are we ready now to become Light?

May the spiritual graces of this Christmas Day be yours. May many blessings accompany you into this new year of 2026. May our gracious God shine light and mercy on all who suffer in every corner of our world. May all of us grow in our capacity to love and respect all peoples and the diverse ways of honoring the Divine.
