Sister Michael Delores: A Life Dedicated to Foster Care

After dedicating over two decades to fostering children in need, Sister Michael Delores Allegri has retired and will return to her roots in Leavenworth, Kansas. Renowned for her unwavering commitment and compassionate nature, Sister Michael has touched the lives of over a hundred children, providing a stable, loving environment to those most in need.

From a young age, Sister Michael Delores felt a calling to work with children. Originally aspiring to teach in an orphanage, her career path took a turn in the late 1960s when government policies shifted towards placing children in foster homes instead of institutions. Holding a degree in sociology, Sister Michael spent over twenty years teaching high school, fostering not only education but also extracurricular excellence among her students.

Sister Michael Delores’s journey into foster care was inspired by fellow Sisters of Charity who served as foster parents in Kansas. Becoming a foster parent in Denver, she tackled the challenges of managing multiple children across different jurisdictions, ensuring each child received consistent care and attention. Her efforts extended beyond mere caregiving; she was a fierce advocate for her foster children, ensuring they had access to necessary resources and were represented in crucial decisions affecting their lives.

Beyond her role as a foster parent, Sister Michael Delores took on significant roles within the Colorado Association of Foster Parents. As secretary and later president, she spearheaded initiatives to educate foster parents on child trauma, advocated for legislative changes, and promoted a supportive community through workshops and social media. Her leadership helped shape policies and improved the support system for foster parents across the state.

Sister Michael Delores’s philosophy on foster care centers on seeing the world through the eyes of the children she cared for, recognizing their unspoken needs, and fighting to meet them. She believed in the importance of stability, often maintaining children in their original schools and daycares to preserve normalcy. Her approach has left indelible marks on many lives, guiding children towards realizing their potential in a world that often seemed against them.

As she plans her return to Leavenworth, Sister Michael Delores looks forward to exploring opportunities to continue advocating for foster children. While she will miss the daily interactions with children, she is ready to leave behind the systemic frustrations that often hampered her efforts. Her legacy, however, will remain a beacon for the foster care community—a testament to the profound impact one person can have on the lives of many.

Sister Michael Delores Allegri’s retirement marks the end of an era and the continuation of a legacy that will inspire future generations of foster parents. Her life’s work underscores the significant difference dedicated individuals can make, proving that compassion and advocacy can transform lives.
