The Triune God is a community of Love! Father, Son, and Holy Spirit give and receive love endlessly. In this month’s Gospels, we observe the love of Jesus in action. We see how Jesus interacts with those in need of healing, by seeing them, laying hands on them, and curing them. In the beatitudes Jesus calls blessed those whose hearts are full of desires for peace, justice, trust, and utter dependence on the mercy and compassion of his Father.
This is echoed in Pope Francis’ fourth and most recent encyclical, Dilexit Nos, which was published at the conclusion of the Synod on Synodality. Dilexit Nos (which means He Loved Us) reminds us that “Jesus himself (in the Gospel of John) told his disciples, “I have loved you,” “I have called you friends.” In his letter to the Romans, Saint Paul tells them and us that nothing can ever separate us from the love of Christ.
It is important to take time during this winter season of nature’s rest to listen to what is going on in our inner self, to recognize our need for God and how we are called to participate in the love of our Triune God.
