As part of our observance of the Season of Creation, Sisters Rejane Cytacki and Pat Johannsen, along with two friends from Xavier House, Bethany and Kathy, joined us for the annual Native Plant Society meeting in Wilson, Kansas, located in the scenic Smoky Hills. Wilson is known as the Czech Capital of Kansas and proudly displays the state’s largest Czech egg.
The meeting featured educational talks and nature walks, highlighting the beauty of Kansas landscapes. We especially enjoyed our stay at Wilson Lake State Park, where we stayed in one of the park’s cozy cabins, taking in the stunning lake views.
During the trip, we visited Mushroom Rock Park and explored a riparian area known as the Connie Achterberg Wildlife-Friendly Demonstration Farm. Our guide, Dr. Jacqueline Augustine from the Kansas Audubon Society, shared insights into the farm’s role as a conservation area managed by the Audubon Society of Kansas.
Rex Buchanan also gave a presentation on the petroglyphs of Kansas, revealing the surprising number of caves scattered throughout the state. The experience left us with a deeper appreciation for the rich natural and cultural heritage of Kansas.
