A May 11 field trip connected participants with ecology, community organizing, and traditional knowledge.
A group of Sisters, Associates, and SCL employees visited Sankara Farm on Monday, May 11, 2026, for an educational field trip focused on sustainable agriculture, ecological stewardship, and food justice.
Farmers Ryan and Izula guided the group through the farm’s acreage, highlighting medicinal herb gardens, production beds and high tunnels, permaculture spaces, agrivoltaics, composting toilets, and a Johnson-Su bioreactor, a specialized composting system designed to improve soil health.

Throughout the visit, Ryan and Izula shared the vision and inspiration behind Sankara Farm, drawing from the work of George Washington Carver, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Thomas Sankara. Guests also learned about medicinal plants such as comfrey and yarrow, as well as the farm’s efforts to increase access to fresh food in underserved areas of Kansas City.

The experience offered more than a tour of sustainable farming practices. Participants explored how Sankara Farm’s work connects ecology, racial justice, economic justice, and community education through conversations about food sovereignty, food apartheid, and traditional ecological knowledge.
