A KanCare Rally in support of Medicaid expansion in Kansas is scheduled Wednesday, April 24, 2 to 3 p.m., at Saint Vincent Clinic, 818 N. 7th Street, Leavenworth, Kan. (Parking available in Crossfit Unconquered lot, 902 N. 7th Street, Leavenworth.)

Featured speakers will include Kansas Lt. Gov. Lynn Rogers; George Noonan, executive director, Caritas Clinics; and John Shively, coordinator, Office of Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, who is coordinating the event.

Shively urges members of the local faith community, social service agency representatives and concerned citizens to attend to express their support of KanCare on behalf of the 150,000 Kansans who would gain access to health coverage through this expansion.

Shively explains that the Kansas House of Representatives voted in support of this expansion in March. However, leadership of the Kansas Senate is blocking the bill from coming to the floor for debate. On May 1, senators will vote on a motion to override these efforts and to allow the bill to come before the Kansas Senate for discussion.

“This makes the timing of the April 24 rally critical as we gather people committed to the moral and economic reasons to expand Medicaid,” Shively adds. “If the people of Leavenworth and Lansing are unable to attend the rally, I hope they will contact their state senators to express their support of KanCare expansion in advance of the May 1 vote.”
