Mary Lou Anderson Named 2025 Vincentian Charism Award Recipient

We are pleased to announce that Mary Lou Anderson of Leavenworth, Kansas, is the 2025 recipient of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) Community’s Vincentian Charism Award. A retired physical education teacher of 32 years, Mary Lou has devoted her retirement to faith-filled service at the Leavenworth Interfaith Shelter of Hope, where she has volunteered since 2018.

“Mary Lou is kind and gentle in her interactions and so calm and supportive of the guests. She goes beyond the call of duty. If she sees something that needs to be done, she does it,” said Sister Pat Johannsen, SCL, who nominated Mary Lou for the award.

In addition to her work at the Shelter of Hope, Mary Lou volunteers with Deeper Window LLC, a respite program for caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease, and with Itch’n to Stitch, a sewing group that makes quilts and blankets for those in need. At her church, she helps prepare and serve community meals and ensures food is shared with shelter guests.

Her work is deeply rooted in her faith. “Without my relationship with the Lord, I don’t think I would have the heart to serve others the way I do,” she said. “I have been blessed my whole life—with family, faith, and love. Serving others is how I give back.” We congratulate Mary Lou as a worthy recipient of the Vincentian Charism Award and thank Sister Pat for nominating her. Mary Lou will receive the award at the Saint Vincent de Paul Feast Day celebration on September 27, 2025, at the SCL Mother House.
