From July 25–27, SCL Associates gathered in Leavenworth for Associate Days – Kansas, a weekend of connection, service, and spiritual enrichment. Associates traveled from across the country—including California and Colorado—to reconnect, serve the local community, and celebrate the Initial Commitment of Janet Hiebl, our newest Associate.
The 2025 Associate Days theme is “Dignity.” Earlier this year, in May, Associates in Montana gathered in Billings to serve those on the margins and learn from local leaders working toward systemic change for the unhoused. This theme carried forward in Kansas, with a dinner at the Marillac Retreat and Spirituality Center featuring guest speaker Sister Amy Willcott, Director of DePaul Leavenworth Attainable Housing. Sr. Amy shared the inspiring growth of their program—from one property to nineteen properties in 2025—providing income-based housing for individuals who can support themselves.
On Saturday, Associates, Sisters, and SCL employees came together to serve food-insecure individuals in the Leavenworth area. At First United Methodist Church, volunteers prepared nearly 600 meals for a unique drive-through meal service. Guests simply shared how many meals they needed, and volunteers quickly assembled and delivered the meals to waiting cars.
Each meal included freshly made ham and cheese wraps, carrots, applesauce, and dessert. Vegetarian guests received grilled cheese sandwiches, vegetables, and applesauce as a nutritious alternative.
The weekend concluded on Sunday with Mass and the joyful celebration of Janet Hiebl’s Initial Commitment as an SCL Associate. Associates participated as readers and gift bearers. For those unable to attend in person, the Mass and ceremony were live-streamed. Following the liturgy and the pinning of Janet, the community gathered for lunch and an ice cream social at the Marillac Center. Associates and Sisters shared stories of service, reflecting on the growing need to care for and serve others in today’s world.

The final 2025 Associate Days will be held September 12–14 in Denver, Colorado, at The Gardens at St. Elizabeth. A full weekend of events is planned, continuing the meaningful theme of “Dignity.”
