Celebrating 167 Years of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth

On November 11, 2025, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth celebrated their 167th Founders’ Day—honoring the vision and courage of Mother Xavier Ross and the Sisters who journeyed to Leavenworth in 1858.

Across the SCL Community and sponsored ministries, the spirit of our founders was joyfully remembered and renewed. At the Mother House, Sisters, Associates, and staff gathered for a prayer service, followed by a reception featuring Sister Paula Rose Jauernig’s homemade cinnamon rolls, Mass, and a festive Founders’ Day dinner.

The University of Saint Mary celebrated with students, staff, and faculty gathering for a reflection on the Circle Drive and enjoying apple crisp in the dining hall. The celebration extended through music as the University’s Community Choir honored the Sisters with two Founders’ Day concerts—one private performance in Ross Chapel at the Mother House and a public concert in Annunciation Chapel.

Cristo Rey Kansas City also marked the occasion within its 20th anniversary year, inspired by Sister Maureen Hall’s reflection on Mother Xavier Ross and honoring this year’s Founder’s Award recipients—modern-day champions of service and compassion.

From Leavenworth to Kansas City, Founders’ Day reminds us that the spirit of charity begun 167 years ago continues to grow through faith, education, and service.
