The Daily Sentinel newspaper recently posted an article highlighting efforts of Gretchen Gore, SCL Associate, and co-worker Cindy Ortiz at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Grand Junction, Colo., who are using a mobile health van to help connect people with services and healthcare opportunities. The mobile van outreach is part of Gretchen’s ministry as director of mission integration at the SCL Health hospital; Cindy is oncology quality manager.
St. Mary’s is applying funds received from the SCL charity budget and the SCL Health Mother Xavier Ross Award to some of the outreach efforts
Sister Barbara Aldrich, vice president mission integration at St. Mary’s, says that more and more community agencies are asking to partner with the hospital. The van will go to two schools in underserved areas during parent teacher conferences to give flu shots. “We only had 40 percent of our county population get vaccinated last year, and we had a very high rate of serious flu.”
Various schools have requested a mobile van visit during November when sixth-graders are due for one of their immunizations. “Some of the schools have found compliance challenging because parents living in poverty have a hard time getting children to the health department,” Sister Barbara add.
