Sisters of Charity Endow University of Saint Mary Scholarship Recognizing Archbishop Keleher

( Leavenworth , Kan. )— The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) religious community has endowed a scholarship for students at the University of Saint Mary to recognize Archbishop Emeritus James P. Keleher.  Sister Sue Miller, SCL community director, announced the donation of $10,000 to Saint Mary’s scholarship fund during a reception at the university on Thursday, May 12, honoring the recently retired leader of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas .

Sister Sue said the Archbishop’s accomplishments and his “ability to energize people” were more than enough to justify the scholarship.

“Of special importance to the Sisters of Charity and our sponsored ministry of the University of Saint Mary,” she said, “Archbishop Keleher has been a friend of youth and also a great friend and advocate of Catholic education—from elementary schools to high schools to higher education.”

Sister Sue presented the Archbishop with a framed water color print of the University of Mary to commemorate the occasion. Ryan Harris, a junior at Saint Mary from Kansas City , Kan. , acknowledged the importance and value of scholarship support to the students.  As a special tribute to the Archbishop, who is of Irish descent, Harris sang a medley of Irish songs.  Offering the invocation for the brief program was Rev. Michael Stubbs, Saint Mary chaplain and pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Lansing , Kan.

Sister Diane Steele, USM president, greeted guests and acknowledged the generosity and support of the religious community in endowing the scholarship.  Guests included Board members, faculty, staff, students and members of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth.

The University of Saint Mary is a Catholic liberal arts college that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees at multiple locations including Leavenworth , Kansas City, Kan. , and Overland Kan.   The university was founded by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth in 1923.
