Since the founding of Leavenworth, there have been two institutions that have played an integral role in defining what the community looks like.

The first institution is the United States Army, which has long had a military fort and college on the city’s northern edge. The other is the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, which has looked out for the welfare of all of the city’s residents since the middle of the 19th Century.

Although the pair might seem like an odd combination, most residents would agree that the arrangement has worked out quite nicely for the city.
